Dairy products of Crete
The island of Crete, the third largest island of the Mediterranean, is famous for its long tradition of dairy produce. The most common live-stock found on the island is sheep and goat. It is with their milk that all milk, yogurt and other dairy products of the island is made with.
Mythology claims that Zeus, the king of the ancient gods, was brought up on the mountains of Crete being fed with the milk of the Amalthia goat. What is more, archaeological findings prove that already from the proto-minoan period, cheese was an integral part of Cretans diet. The traditional products of the island include the following: Cretan Graviera (PDO), fresh and dry anthotyros, yogurt and fresh creamy cheeses such as myzethra, xynomyzethra and Chania pechtogalo.
