Each region of Crete is distinguished by its local specialties and products. Small-scale producers and farmer cooperatives offer high quality fresh products available in the local markets and taverns. The inhabitants of the municipalities presented in this site value and promote their own home-grown products and the agricultural practices are passed down from generation to generation.
In the prefectures of Heraklion and Chania you will find exquisite olive oil, excellent wine and of course raki, which is very popular in these regions. You may also try other local specialties, such as kalitsounia (sweet cheese pastries), ladokouloura (olive oil biscotti), amugdalota (almond based pastries) and the so-called "spoon sweets" made by sugar and regional fruit, usually grapes.
You should definitely try wild artichokes, honey and olives as well as the excellent Cretan kritharokouloura (barley rusks), which is usually served moistened with water and topped with tomato, olive oil and feta cheese (a dish called dakos).
Come and try our local cuisine and we ensure you, if the saying "love goes through the stomach" is true, you will fall in love with Crete.
