Crete features about 3.366 Karst Formations and specifically 2.896 natural caves, 97 artificial caves, 89 sinkholes, 86 caves-sinkholes, 46 cone-sinkholes, 18 dolines, 13 poljes, 15 natural bridges and 106 gorges. Their names, which are more than their number (many bear more than one name), are listed in official catalogues. The caves of Crete are very interesting because of their unique geological, ecological, and archeological value. However, they are also interesting to linguists, philologists, ethnographers and historians who search the origins of their multiple names.
